With Covid, like many parents, I have invested in a lot of LARGE children foam products. The biggest debate for kids toys are the Nugget and Blocksy. Which one is better?

What is a Nugget/Blocksy?

The Nugget and Blocksy are four foam pieces. They can configure into a couch and be used for open play. The Nugget is covered with micro suede fabric with 2 triangle pillows, while the Blocksy is covered with vinyl and 2 wedges. Both have colorful coverings to match your house. The Blocksy currently comes in 9 different colors and the Nugget frequently rotates the coverings and will “retire” coverings which then become highly sought out.

Both companies are US based. The Nugget Headquarters is based in Hillsborough, North Carolina and Foamnasium is based in Indianapolis, IN.

Who started it first?

Foamcraft (est. in 1952) is the parent company of Foamnasium. Foamnasium started in 2011 to manufacture childrens products. Foamnasium introduced the Blocksy February 2019 source: Instagram. The Nugget started as a Kickstarter geared towards college students in 2015. Click here to watch the Kickstarter video.

Nugget dimensions:

Short version: The Nugget is wider and shorter. The bases are two square foams in microsuede fabric.

The Nugget is 33″ deep and 66″ long in its standard configuration. The seat is 8.75″ above the ground, and it’s 22.25″ high to the top of the pillows in the standard configuration.

The Nugget box measures 15″ x 15″ x 34.”

The whole Nugget weighs 27 lbs. That’s the sum total of the base (12 lbs), the seat cushion (9 lbs), and the two triangle pillows (3 lbs each).

*My eldest son is 4 years old ~ 35 lbs. The Blocksy/Nugget may hold more weight, but I do not have a child to test. I tested the triangle position and can confirm it does not hold my weight (130 lbs).

Below are a few testimonials from other mothers:

(Blocksy) Vinyl cracks and is not pet friendly material. Foamnasium offers more than just pads and triangles.

Kelly B.

With 3 dogs and 1 cat I did not have a problem with vinyl cracking, but I know that every household and pets are different.

(Blocksy) The material is better for sliding, but also it’s more narrow (& longer) so there’s room to walk up beside it. The Nugget takes up the whole width of the stairs.

Chelsea B.

I think blocksy is better for lounging as the pillow is a different shape and the top pad doesn’t slide around like it does with the nugget. Also blocksy is as long as a twin mattress whereas nugget is as wide.

How much are they?

Both the Blocksy and Nugget are $229.

Where do I get a them?

The Blocksy is available on the Foamnasium website, Amazon (Blocksy is currently out of stock on Amazon, link is to Blocksy mini), and Wayfair. The current shipping estimate is 5 weeks, however with Covid and increase of buyers it can increase shipment time. The Nugget is only available on the Nugget website with only a few restocks a year until the company grows to scale.

Currently, the Blocksy is more readily available with retailers. With the limited drops, the Nugget has a high resell value. I have seen Nuggets priced hundreds of dollars over retail on multiple reselling platforms (ebay, Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, etc.)

So which one is better?

When I asked my son if he liked the green (mint blocksy) or orange (taxicab Nugget) one better, he said I love my green and orange couch. He would not choose. So if your kid is like mine, he won’t know the difference.

I feel like Blocky and Nugget are like Nike and Adidas or Team Edward and Team Jacob. They both have their disadvantages…However there are a lot of mompreneaurs that are quickly solving the disadvantages. I do enjoy the easy wipe ups from spills with the Blocksy and sometimes feel like Lord Business with the Nuggets. Both are great and I LOVE them, however with my 2 messy boys and holding a newborn the Blocksies (I have the full, mini, and mega wedges) are what works best for my family right now. That doesn’t mean I won’t get another Nugget in the future. I would totally have a playroom dedicated to just foam toys and Lego, however right now I have to share it with our living room.
